This is an album of background music, soundtrack music, whatever you want to call it. I drew a lot of inspiration for these from the works of Nobuo Uematsu and Koji Kondo, both of whom have composed music for some of the greatest video games of all time. Given that the music was composed to sit beneath stories people told me about their experiences navigating the COVID-19 pandemic for my music podcast, I aimed for there to be some kind of storytelling element or dramatic texture to each piece. Some bits are more ambient and ominous, where others are outright poppy and musical. Over the summer, I came to think of these tracks as different 'levels' in an as-of-yet nonexistent videogame, or - in other words - SECRET STAGES. All except for one, that is. "SOOSISOOSI" is a jam that I recorded while trying to pull an musical cue out of my ass at 3am for an episode that was going to air the next morning. It's technically a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne", so that may be useful to know.
